| 7/8/06 DENIS LEARY, LEWIS BLACK, MARIO CANTONE PART OF 7TH ANNUAL BOSTON COMEDY AND MOVIE FESTIVAL Boston Comedy and Movie Festival organizer Jim McCue today announced that Denis Leary, Lewis Black and Mario Cantone, as well as the future of comedy, will be among the comics at the “historically funny” 7th annual Boston Comedy Festival, which takes place from September 10-16, 2006 in various locations in Boston.
Leary and Cantone, along with Eddie Brill, who helped create the Emerson Comedy Workshop while students there, return to school on Thursday, September 14 at 7:30 p.m. to celebrate 30 Years of Comedy at Emerson, which has produced some of America’s funniest comics, including Jay Leno, Henry Winkler, Anthony Clark, Steve Wright and Andrea Martin. Proceeds from this show will benefit a scholarship for Emerson students studying comedy.
Lewis Black and Friends will close the Festival on Friday, September 15 at 8:30 and Saturday, September 16 at 9:30 p.m. The Boston Comedy Festival asked Black to assemble a group of his favorite comics, and sharing the stage with him will be John Bowman, Nick DiPaolo, Kenny Rogerson, Jim McCue, and Ireland’s premiere comic, Des Bishop.
Shows take place at the Cutler Majestic Theatre, 219 Tremont Street. Tickets for 30 Years of Comedy at Emerson and Lewis Black and Friends are $35 and $45, and are available at Telecharge at 1-800-233-3123 or Telecharge.com.
The Boston Comedy Festival Contest preliminaries and semi-finals take place at Nick’s Comedy Stop at and the Vault respectively, and the finals, in which eight (down from 96) comics compete for $10,000 in prize money, take place on Saturday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cutler Majestic. The Festival showcases the best in stand-up talent from the region, as well as national headlining talent and new comedy films, and culminates in the $10,000 Stand Up Comedy Contest, in which close to a hundred comics compete for prize money and a chance to perform for national talent scouts. Norm Crosby to receive Lifetime Achievement BOSTON - Aug 08, 2006 Boston Comedy and Movie Festival organizer Jim McCue today announced that Anthony Clark, Bill Burr and Bill Dana have been added to the “historically funny” Boston Comedy Festival’s stellar lineup that already includes Denis Leary, Lewis Black as well as the very future of comedy. The Festival takes place from September 10-16, 2006 in various locations in Boston.

In addition, the Finals will feature the presentation of its first annual lifetime achievement awards to Dorchester native and king of the malaprop, Norm Crosby, a comedy veteran known for his appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show and The Dean Martin Show, and Jonathan Winters, mercurial improv genius, who has spent half a century making people laugh and paving the way for many of the great comics who came later. Crosby will be on hand to receive his award. Winters received his in a taped ceremony, which will be played at the Finals, earlier this year.

Ninety-eight bright-eyed comics from all over the country compete with each other to advance to the finals, and when it's over, there will be one battered and broken guy or gal standing with a nice little bag of money. Two comics from each preliminary round advance to the Semi-Finals on Thursday and Friday Oct. 11 and 12, and eight comics proceed to the finals at the Cutler Majestic on Oct. 13. Off the Boat Comedy with Irish comics Ed Byrne, Keith Farnan and Brian Joyce

Irish comic and Fringe Festival favorite Ed Byrne, said to be the biggest comic in Ireland, which means he should also be the biggest comic in Southie, Charlestown, Brighton and parts of Dorchester and Somerville, comes to Somerville to perform at the Burren. Byrne has appeared at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival six times, and at the HBO Comedy Festival in Aspen. He has made five appearances on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and is a regular guest on The Panel on RTE Television Ireland. Also appearing will be fellow Irishman Keith Farnan, back by popular demand after his St. Patrick's Day appearance a the Burren, and Brian Joyce, who is Boston Irish, but might soon turn into Ireland Irish with recent gigs at Kilkenny and Galway, in addition to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Yes, even the biggest curmudgeons in the world have friends, and each year the country's favorite curmudgeon, The Daily Show's Lewis Black, brings several of his friends to The Boston Comedy Festival to put on a show that revels in absurdity, stupidity and of course, bitterness. So far this year, Black has identified only two friends - Boston Legend and one of the founders of the infamous Ding Ho Club DJ Hazard, and Irish comic Ed Byrne. Black promises three more friends in time to write another press release before the festival.

At the finals, the Boston Comedy Festival and Emerson College will present Comedy Lifetime Achievement Awards to Mort Sahl, a comedy trailblazer who paved the way for the likes of Lenny Bruce and Dick Gregory, and also wrote speeches for President John F. Kennedy; and Shelley Berman, the legendary comic celebrating 50 years of comedy in 2007 who has a recurring role on the set-in-Boston show Boston Legal. In addition, the Comedian of the Year Award will be presented to Lewis Black. Berman and Black will all be on hand to receive their awards.
